A good book is a conversation between reader and writer

Cadence was founded in 2020 by Sophie Beal and Rachel Theunissen to champion Christian voices in the secular market. We’re now focusing on historical fiction with our imprint, Cadence Timepiece.

Our Journey

Our debut novel, SOLD by Sue Barrow, was selected for the 2024 Read for Empathy collection and received excellent reviews from The Guardian and The School Libraries Association.

Last year, we narrowed our focus to publish purely historical fiction. Our first Timepiece title, Clouds over Bowland by Rosemary Sturge, was released on April 2 2026.

Forthcoming titles include Steve Cox’s five-book Tom Tyler series set in the English Civil War.

Rachel stepped down as director in 2024 but remains a trusted advisor.

Collaboration & Community

We value collaboration deeply. Sophie works closely with Cadence’s editor-at-large, Gary Dalkin of To the Last Word.

Cadence is also proud to be a member of the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG), staying connected with the wider publishing community.

Beyond publishing, Sophie actively contributes to the literary community, speaking at events such as the Bournemouth Writing Festival and appearing on podcasts including The Secrets of Story.

Our Purpose

At Cadence, our purpose is simple: to nurture and amplify Christian voices telling stories that bring the past to life, offer hope, and spark meaningful discussion.

We warmly invite you to join us on this journey, whether as a reader, writer, or fellow creative.
