Cadence is now focusing on publishing historical fiction written by Christian voices, for the general (secular) market.

We’re looking for novels that feel both timeless and timely, where faith is an essential part of the author’s worldview, even if it isn’t the subject of the book.

In short:

  • Stories set in the past — any era, any place.

  • A strong narrative voice — the kind that pulls a reader straight into the time and place.

  • Carefully researched with well-crafted prose.

  • Not ‘Christian fiction’ in the genre sense (no altar calls, no overt preaching).

  • Written by authors of Christian faith, whose worldview informs their storytelling. Faith may simply be the lens through which the author sees the world.

  • Authors ready for rigorous editing — willing to polish and refine an already very good novel for publication.

These are books that can sit proudly alongside the best historical fiction, while offering a fresh, faith-inflected voice that feels authentic, complex, and human.

A Note on Capacity (& Why This Matters)

We genuinely love finding new authors — but the reality is we can only publish two novels a year.

Cadence is a small, hands-on press. Every book we take on receives close editorial attention, thoughtful design, and long-term support. That level of care takes time. And because we want to give each author the attention they deserve, we have to be incredibly selective.

So if you don’t hear back right away — or if we say no — please understand it’s rarely about you. It’s almost always about fit and timing.

Do I Need an Agent?

No. You’re very welcome to submit your work directly. We love working with unagented authors.

However — and this is important — your manuscript needs to be as refined as it would be if you had an agent. That means:

  • It’s a complete novel (not a work-in-progress).

  • You’ve revised and polished it.

  • You’ve had trusted readers give feedback (ideally not just friends or family).

  • You’ve worked on it as far as you possibly can.

What to Send

If you think your novel might be a good fit for us, we’d love to see it. Please send:

  • A one-page synopsis.

  • The first three chapters (or approx. 10,000 words).

  • A short covering note introducing yourself, your book, and why you think it might belong at Cadence.

Please give us a nudge after eight weeks if we haven’t responded.
